“Negative perceptions lead to negative outcomes… coverage of Africa is dismissive”

Joaquim Chissano, former Mozambican president, commenting on western media coverage of Africa.

Pick up a daily newspaper and try to find an article on Somalia that isn’t about piracy. Google search 'Iran' and the results are similarly dismissive. And whilst we’ve all heard of George Clooney, who has heard of the famous Sudanese actor Ali Mahdi? Germaine Greer’s a household name but what about the Zimbabwean feminist Jestina Mukoko?

So began Globe Media. An opportunity to take a different perspective. From the rich cuisine of Iraq to happy memories of Zimbabwe, from textile design in Latvia to Indian poetry, Iranian traditions, Polish vinyl, Indonesian art and much, much more.

The result is showcased in a magazine (download the pdf here), with an audio CD and DVD of digital stories plus here online.

With thanks to The Learning Revolution, the Department for Business Innovation and Skills and NIACE for allowing Globe Media to become a reality.
